WE TOLD YOU SO, HARRY.
Tell Majority Leader Harry Reid that it’s time to stop waiting, stop talking, and start acting to restore majority rule to the United States Senate.
“The last several years we have had over 400 filibusters — a record number of filibusters in the Senate.” - Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL)
"In 2010, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid sold out Senate Democrats by striking a 'gentleman's agreement' with Republican Minority Leader McConnell instead of pushing for strong filibuster reform," said Becky Bond, CREDO's political director. "And now he's done the exact same thing, again. When will Democratic Leadership learn the lesson that Republicans will not negotiate in good faith?” - Huffington Post
“Due to the Senate’s rules, even non-controversial proposals and appointees can take days of the Senate’s floor time — and members of the minority can block votes on legislation they support unless they are allowed to propose unrelated measures. Though 71 Senators ultimately voted for cloture last month on the nomination of Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, the Republican minority filibustered the nominationand tied up the Senate for days. The watered-down filibuster reforms agreed to in January did little to address these problems.” -Think Progress
“A report from the Brennan Center for Justice last month on the pressing need for filibuster reform found the number of bills passed by the Senate has hit a half-century low: 2.8 percent of all bills introduced were actually passed in the current session. The report also found that floor activity devoted to cloture votes has been 50 percent greater than at any time since World War II, illuminating how the filibuster chews up time that could be devoted to substantive policymaking.”
“Our Constitution combines with the way we draw congressional districts to overrepresent conservatives in both houses. The 100-member Senate is based on two senators per state regardless of size. This gives rural states far more power than population-based representation would. The filibuster makes matters worse. It’s theoretically possible for 41 senators representing less than 11 percent of the population to block pretty much anything.” - Washington Post
“I’m a very patient man,” Reid said. “We made changes but the time will tell whether they’re big enough. I’m going to wait and build a case. If the Republicans in the Senate don’t start approving some judges, and don’t start helping get some of these nominations done, then we’re going to have to take more action.” - Talking Points Memo
It’s time to stop waiting and stop hoping the Republican minority will end a pattern of blanket obstructionism. It’s time to reform the filibuster, and restore majority rule to the United States Senate.
Send a postcard to Harry Reid and tell him: We told you so, Harry. Reform the filibuster now, and restore majority rule to the Senate.
